Once we hit fifty the body begins to change. Joints get stiffer, we lose muscle tone, over or underused joints get arthritic, or osteo-arthritic, while old injuries start to act up more, and metabolism slows down.
The benefit of aging, is that we are less competitive, and more introspective.
With mindfulness of our physical limitations, strengths and abilities, Yoga can make aging graceful, fun, and easy with measured challenges.
You can choose what best suits your needs for each particular class/session. Your choices vary from many styles of yoga. A combination or one of: Gentle, Restorative, Therapeutic, Vinyasa (more active flow), or Pranyama (breathing techniques) and Meditation, will address all needs.
All poses can be modified to accommodate your body with blankets, blocks, chairs and walls.
Yoga brings awareness to the body as a whole unit working together.
Yoga reveals awareness of mind, body breath, connection.
Thus enhances coordination.
Keeps muscles limber, flexible and strong.
Keeps joints healthy and lubricated with synovial fluids by starting with slow gentle movement.
Keeps the mind calm and tranquil, as the whole purpose of yoga is to learn to sit still and meditate!
Breath work teaches how to relax while moving, especially through challenging poses. It also stretches the accessory breathing muscles to help establish optimal breathing habits. Specific breathing techniques can reduce anxiety, calm the nervous system, cool or heat the body, and take one deeper into meditation.
Of primary importance is the need for balance as we age. Balance involves an interplay between eyes, brain, nervous system, muscles and bone. Yoga consistently challenges this interplay whether in poses standing on both legs or one leg, as well as on hands and knees, or shoulders, even head to strengthen balance.
Many yoga teachers are incorporating more core work to their yoga classes, which deeply enhances all of the above mentioned benefits.
